The Rare Beauty of the Worm Moon: Blood Moon and Moonbow Magic

And here we are, the last Full Moon of the winter equinox, and spring is just a few short weeks away! Isn’t that a wonderful thought? I know it has been a frightfully long and cold winter, but as the saying goes: “...all things come to an end, and this too shall pass!”, or something to that effect!  So, let us discover what exciting things are in store with this month's Full Moon, the Worm Moon.

What is the Worm Moon?

The Worm Moon is the name given to the Full Moon in March. It signals the coming of spring and the time when the Earth begins to thaw, and the earthworm reappears. This is also a wonderful time for outdoorsy people as it marks the return of the robin and other birds who come home for spring, filling our skies with the sound of song once again. This year's Worm Moon will illuminate our skies on March 14th.

Blood Moon – A Lunar Eclipse

This month, we’re fortunate to witness not only a lunar eclipse but also a blood moon. The blood moon appears as a strikingly bright, large moon with a reddish hue, caused when the moon enters the Earth's umbra (the darkest part of the Earth's shadow) during the lunar eclipse. This makes it an especially beautiful moon to behold.

Not only is it a spectacular event for moon gazers to witness, but the blood moon is also a powerful time for emotional healing, representing deep transformation, release, and clarity.

As the reddish hue illuminates our horizons, symbolising rebirth and renewal, it encourages us to let go of unresolved emotions, harmful patterns, and limiting beliefs. Create a space for personal growth and introspection, embrace the changes that await you, and have trust in the process of all things.

Somewhere under the Moonbow

It’s a rare phenomenon, but those fortunate enough to witness it are in for an absolute treat. Like its daytime counterpart, a moonbow (also known as a lunar rainbow) occurs when light from the moon is refracted through water droplets in the air. Because it is such a rare phenomenon, the night sky conditions must be just right for the moonbow to appear. So, why is this relevant to this month’s moon post? Well, it just so happens that the conditions for this month’s Full Moon align with some of the necessary criteria, making it highly probable that a moonbow will appear.  But what conditions are required?

We may curse the dreaded spring showers as we long for sunny days, but for a moonbow to appear, we need both clear skies and moisture. A spring shower on the first or second night of the full moon may provide the perfect environment for this rare and spectacular phenomenon to occur.

The position of the moon is another crucial factor, as the moon needs to be at least 42 degrees above the horizon. During the Worm Moon, the moon will be in a favourable position, further enhancing the chances of witnessing this rare, bewildering sight.

If you want to see the moonbow in all its glory, you will need to wait until there is moisture in the air (either from rain or mist kicked up by a waterfall or the sea) and stand with the moon behind you. The moon does not emit as much light as the sun, so while the colours will appear, the human eye may not distinguish them and may instead perceive a faint, ghostly white arc. However, you can capture all the colours of the rainbow using a long-exposure camera or high-speed film.

Dream come true

This dream-supporting moon is the perfect opportunity to make your dreams a reality, as you’re guided toward growth and manifestation. As opportunities begin to unfold, embrace the exciting new beginnings that come with them and get ready to manifest your aspirations. Let go of what no longer serves you, visualise your goals, set clear intentions, and be open to opportunities for personal and professional growth.  Remember, just as the earth begins to warm, and the worm rises from the ground, we too emerge renewed and ready for the arrival of Spring.

Crystals for the Worm Moon

Labradorite – Known for its association with the moon and its iridescent, rainbow-like colours that embody the moonbow in crystal form, Labradorite is a stone that enhances intuition and psychic powers. It’s especially useful during times of transformation, making it a perfect companion for the Full Moon.

Bloodstone – A powerful stone often linked to transformation and healing; Bloodstone is an excellent companion during the Blood Moon. Its grounding energy helps clear away negative energies making it ideal for this potent lunar phase.

Moonstone – A personal favourite (as you all know), Moonstone is a truly wonderful stone to use during this time. With its deep connection to the moon and the divine feminine, Moonstone helps balance emotions and intuition, making it the perfect choice during the transformative energy of the Worm Moon.
