Lammas, the Season of Transformation

August is fast approaching, bringing with it the turning of the season and the festival of Lammas. A harvest festival known to encourage gratitude and acknowledge growth – both in the land, and in ourselves.

Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh, is a sabbat of the Wheel of the Year, celebrated on August 1st. It is known as the first harvest festival and is traditionally linked to grains and fruit. Marking the cross-quarter day between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox, Lammas indicates the shift towards shorter days, as we honour the sun’s waning power.

How to Celebrate

The name Lammas is derived from the Old English word “hlaf” meaning ‘loaf-mass’, and people traditionally celebrated by gathering grains and offering their first loaf to the Gods as a gesture of gratitude and respect. Modern-day rituals may include baking bread and celebrating with a seasonal feast to share with loved ones and the community.

Another beautiful way to celebrate this sabbat is to take a mindful walk, observing the Earth around you and the subtle signs of the changing season. While we are still within the peak of summer, slow changes are beginning to appear, such as the first elderberries and juicy blackberries ripening along the hedgerows.

Taking Stock of what Matters Most

Although Lammas is traditionally associated with grain and harvest, it also holds personal significance. The sabbat acts as a quiet reminder to take stock of our lives, evaluate our goals and set intentions for the season ahead. A prominent moment to celebrate yourself, take some time for quiet reflection and think about how far you have come. It isn’t about material growth alone; inner growth and transformation are equally important. Name and honour your achievements, and take this time to reflect on all that you have accomplished so far in the year. Give yourself a gentle pat on the back, release anything that dims your power and make space for what truly brings you joy.
