BUILDING MY BELTANE ALTAR

May this season bring you peace, vitality, and a little bit of springtime magic.

Happy springtime and a warm welcome back to one of my most treasured moments of the year: Beltane. Marking the halfway point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, exuberant Beltane holds a very special place in my heart.

As one of the eight Sabbats of the Wheel of the Year, Beltane celebrates our fertile Earth, bringing abundance, fertility, and passion into our path. As the Earth is reborn, we can feel a greater connection to the natural world and embrace the new beginnings that await us. On a personal level, it is a celebration of union. I love to spend Beltane among my sisterhood and family, to feast together and share stories around my fire pit. Keeping these traditions alive and rejoicing in these moments together is what the season is all about for me.

Celebrated this year on May 1st, I thought it would be fun to guide you through one of my favourite traditions, putting together my Beltane Altar.

EARTH AND SEED

A huge part of Beltane is celebrating the creation of new life, healthy crops and the fertilisation of the Earth. Outside, it is important to show gratitude to the Earth by tending to her, planting new seeds, nurturing her, and cleaning up what does not belong. While indoors, I welcome the energy of spring into my home by including nature’s offerings on my Beltane Altar.

I begin by taking a mindful walk through the woodlands with Betty, paying attention to the changing sounds, smells, and sights along the way. While these walks have become part of my daily routine, the beauty of nature during the days of spring never ceases to amaze me. Along my way I collect pieces of nature that I find, giving reverence to the Earths for her abundance and taking them home to use as offerings on my Altar.

There are many items here that I may choose to include, depending on what I find upon my walk. However, one of my favourite flowers to pick would be the radiant Dandelions. Often overlooked as a common weed, the dandelion is a symbol of transformation, endurance, and strength. Its strong roots represent resilience even in the toughest environments, while its bright colour echoes the glorious hue of the sun. Carrying hidden strength, this untamed springtime flower is a humble yet hopeful addition to my Altar, reminding me to hold courage and joy in my heart.

PAPER AND INK

During this time of seasonal change, I feel a deeper connection to nature and all that is happening around me. Beltane marks another turning point in the year, and I feel aligned with this natural movement. Like the current of the river, I begin to move with the change, welcoming growth and new beginnings as they unfurl around me.

Setting my intentions during Beltane feels like planting a seed of hope and releasing it into the care of the Universe. I like to keep my journal and a pen at my Altar, ready to reflect upon my seasonal observations and set plans focused on growth, vitality, connection, and creation. Using the season as a time to pause, reflect, and focus with a renewed sense of direction.

CRYSTALS FOR BELTANE

Now for my favourite part, selecting which crystals to include. There are so many which perfectly align with the themes of Beltane - it can be heard to select which ones to use, so here are my top three.

Carnelian

At its heart, Beltane is a fire festival, so what better crystal to use than the vibrant Carnelian. This radiant stone is renowned for igniting the flame within, boosting creative endeavours and bringing light to your true self. With her confident, energising vibration, she helps you communicate with clarity and truth, encouraging courageous passion in all that you do. Glowing with the warm, life-affirming energy of the sun, she is given a central place on my altar.

Moss agate

Few stones embody such a strong connection to nature as Moss Agate. From her namesake to her deeply grounding vibration, this crystal is the perfect companion for Beltane. Like the deeply grounding energy of the Earth, this verdant crystal will help deepen your bond to the natural world, while keeping you safe and supported during transitional change.

She is a symbol of growth and abundance, assisting in healing and stablisising emotional balance during times of chaos and change. Moss Agate feels like taking a long walk in nature.

Rose quartz

As the story is told, Beltane celebrates the sacred union of God and Goddess coming together to fertilise the earth. With love, passion, union and togetherness at the core of this festival, we now turn our attention to Rose Quartz, the stone of unconditional love.

This harmonious crystal helps deepen our connection to loved ones and ourselves, enriching the themes of the season. Her soft pink, gentle vibration reminds us to give and accept love freely, while inviting compassion and kindness inside.  Welcoming peace, calm and emotional healing, she is a beautiful crystal to hold close during Beltane.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So, with all my items gathered, including some extra sun charms and family heirlooms, I am now ready to put together my Beltane Altar. Putting together the final touches is such a personal thing and I really enjoy taking my time arranging every item, ensuring everything is cleansed and placed with intention.

Now that my Altar is complete, it is time to start manifesting the prompt return of sunshine (which appears to have temporally alluded us) so I can begin to make plans with my sisterhood.

Wishing you all a bountiful Beltane full of love, unity, and abundance.
